(4) Pamunkey River

December 16, 1607

Manquin, VA

The late Barnes Townsend, prominent King William dairy farmer, liked the idea of Capt. Smith visiting his farm. He oversaw the riverbank installation in 2017. (Photo: Ed Haile)

The Pamunkey and its sister river, the Mattaponi, are popular for fishing, canoeing, and kayaking.

About

Failing to locate his brother Powhatan north of the Mattaponi River, Opechancanough returned across Pamunkey Neck with Capt. Smith as his prisoner to ford or boat over the river to the right bank in this vicinity, on the way back to his hunting camp near Alexanders Corner in Hanover County.

Siting

Siting criteria are from the Zuniga map and a direct line of march along ridges from the mouth of Herring Creek.
